The Dallas, Texas ''Negro City Directory'' from 1947-48, published by Don Gilbert for the Dallas Negro Chamber of Commerce, 1948. Rare directory is considered one of the most comprehensive of its kind from the early 20th century segregationist era, one of only two created for Dallas. Book is profusely illustrated with advertisements serving the city's black population, ranging from sports teams, hotels, florists, churches and colleges. Several pages highlight pioneers in traditionally white occupations, such as the first two black policemen of Dallas, a handful of mail carriers and postal clerks and Dallas attorneys. It also includes an ''Introduction to Dallas'' by J.W. Rice of the Dallas Negro Chamber of Commerce, who notes that ''Although Dallas interracially has had its rough spots, it has been remarkably consistent for the degree to which the races have worked together for the development of the city...'' The bulk of the directory consists of the names, addresses, phone numbers and even marital status of the city's black population. Dozens of advertisements fill out the directory. Bound in original red boards with black lettering, hardback volume measures 8'' x 10.75'' and runs 356pp. Shelf wear and some cocking to spine. Separation starting along rear hinge. Very good condition.
