Letter from Dick Clayton to Jane Deacy, along with copy of letter from Clayton to James Dean, with reference to all three of Dean's films: "East of Eden", "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Giant". With lots of detail on "Rebel", Clayton writes about getting the script to Dean, and whether he was going to reject the film before even reading the script. Dated 25 February 1955, letter to Dean mentions a "big sack" of fan mail for Dean before writing, "Saw EAST OF EDEN for the sixth time and enjoyed it as much as ever…Nick Ray is testing for REBEL this week. Both he and Stuart Stern told me they would have the revised script around Saturday and would send it on to you. / Please let me know your reaction to it -- whether or not you want to do it so we can then get into the situation with Warners."
Clayton then mentions that he talked to Dean's father, before commenting on possible start dates for filming what would be ''Giant''. He writes, ''George Stevens goes to Texas again today for more location scouting etc. Looks like Elizabeth Taylor is practically set with the starting date tentatively mid May...'' Two page letter on two sheets measures 8.5'' x 11'', stapled to a letter to Deacy from Clayton on Famous Artists letterhead. Clayton writes to Deacy about ''Rebel'': ''Enclosed is copy of letter I am sending to Jimmy. Was not sure from your letter if he was going to turn down REBEL without seeing script. Nick is supposed to have completed script to send out over the weekend. Just as soon as I hear from you that Jimmy definitely doesn't want to do it Charlie Feldman and his partner Ned Marin will get into the situation with Warners...'' Clayton's letter to Deacy measures 7.25'' x 10.5''; near fine condition. From the estate of James Dean's agent, Jane Deacy.
