Large and dramatic photogravure plate from Edward Sheriff Curtis' ''The North American Indian'', plate 655 entitled ''Grass-House Ceremony-Wichita'', showing the rites performed at the building of a grass house. Sepia portrait is one of the large supplemental plates from volume nineteen of Curtis' comprehensive project to document all the native tribes of the Americas, a many-decade feat completed in 1930. This plate is one of only 36 large supplemental plates from volume XIX, focusing on the Indians of Oklahoma, the Wichita, Southern Cheyenne, Oto, Southern Comanche, and Peyote. Photogravure plate measures 21.875'' x 17'' on Van Gelder paper with deckled edges. With title, plate number, Curtis' 1927 copyright, and printer's credit (Suffolk Engraving Co. of Cambridge) on margins. Matted and framed to 30'' x 26''. Near fine condition.
