One of the most important books in 20th century economic thought, ''Individualism and Economic Order'', signed by its author Friedrich Hayek. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, Ltd., 1949 first edition in original dust jacket. Comprised of a collection of essays ranging from moral philosophy to economic theory, Hayek here defends free market capitalism as contrasted to planned economies, with one essay, in particular, unleashing a wave of research and Nobel Prizes, including Hayek's own Prize. Titled ''The Use of Knowledge in Society'', Hayek convincingly argues that free markets are more efficient and immediate conveyors of information than is a single central planning board; the essay was so influential at the time it was published in 1945 that economist Armen Alchian remembers stopping people in the hallway to ask if they had read Hayek's essay. Book is signed on the front free endpaper in black felt-tip, ''F.A. Hayek'', additionally signed by libertarian Antony Fisher, founder of the Atlas Foundation. Book measures 5.75'' x 8.675''. Some dampstaining to jacket and minute chipping. Foxing to endpapers, with some discoloration to boards, overall in very good condition.
