35 volume set of "The Works of Mark Twain", signed by Twain on the flyleaf of the first volume with both his given name and famous pseudonym: "S.L. Clemens / Mark Twain". This limited edition is #868 of 1,024 copies, near complete in 35 volumes with the rare two "Autobiography" volumes published in 1925 lacking. New York: Gabriel Wells, 1922-23 published after Twain's death; Twain signed the pages in 1906 prior to its publication, and all signed pages were then tipped into volume I of each set. Twain biographer Albert Bigelow Paine also signs volume I, on a separate flyleaf. Volumes each measure 6" x 9". Some expected scuffing to boards, with backstrip damage to a few, paper labels torn or lacking on a few volumes, and some mousing to several volumes. Dampstaining to a few volumes. Most volumes have tight and clean interiors with only a few volumes showing partial separation at hinges. Entire set is in good to very good condition overall.
