Rare triple edge paintings on ''Dombey and Son'', featuring a portrait of Charles Dickens and also scenes from the novel, uncommonly painted on three sides: the top, bottom and fore-edges of the book. London: Chapman and Hall, 1862; volume XIII of Dickens' Works. Concealed by gilt, fore-edge painting is revealed when pages are fanned, a technique invented by the bookbinder for King Charles II, who reportedly grew tired of his books not being returned to his library, and sought a way to secretly identify them in his friends' collections. Bound in blue calf with gilt embellishments, ribbed spine and red titling. Measures 5'' x 7.875''. Light shelf wear, overall in very good plus condition.
