Scarce first edition, first printing of Mark Twain's American masterpiece, ''The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'' in publisher's blue cloth with gilt accents, and profusely illustrated in text throughout. Hartford: The American Publishing Co., 1876. With ''THE'' on half-title page in 10-point font, rather than 14-point, the definitive first printing point. Also with blank versos for half-title and frontispiece, and four pages of advertisements in back. Measures 7'' x 8.75''. Professional restoration includes recasing into original binding, and touch-up to spine head and tail caps, and corners. Text block has been trimmed, and endpapers have been replaced, missing flyleafs. Pale peach rear free endpaper still present. Gilt on boards still vibrant and book displays beautifully. Very good condition.
