Edward Gorey original artwork for ''The Autobiography of William Butler Yeats'', circa 1958, rejected for the cover but similar in style to what was ultimately published (see lot 198). Completed in black and yellow paint against inked crosshatching, the result is a dramatic rendering of a fierce black bird, a creature often used as symbolism in Yeats' poetry. Initialed by Gorey at lower right. Visible portion of artwork measures 4'' x 6.25'', framed to 9'' x 11.5''. Not examined out of frame, but appears near fine. With original receipt from Gotham Book Mart.
