Sir Mark Sykes letter signed during World War I. Letter is dated 2 June 1917, at which time Sykes was negotiating the language of the Balfour Declaration, in which Britain declared its support for a Jewish home in Palestine. A strong pro-Zionist at this time, Sykes' guiding hand over the Declaration was critical to its eventual passage. Sykes here writes on Shepheard's Hotel stationery in Cairo to ''My Dear Littleton'', in part, ''Please let me hasten to thank you very much indeed for all you did for our party on Thursday evening in connection with our journey to Cairo. / I tried to catch you before we left but you had just gone...[signed] Mark Sykes''. Single page letter measures 5.75'' x 7.5''. Folds, light wear and toning. Overall very good condition with a bold signature by Sykes.
