Rare first edition of ''A Code of Gentoo Laws, or, Ordinations of the Pundits'', the Hindu laws first translated from the original Sanskrit into Persian, and then from Persian into English. London: East India Company privately printed, 1776. Translated by Nathaniel Brassey Halhed with contributions by Warren Hastings, the Governor of Bengal, this translation was intended to better understand local codes of inheritance, caste and religion before imposing English laws onto the population. Complete in two sections, running over 400pp. with eight engraved plates of Devanagari language characters. Bound in contemporary quarter-leather boards with custom title on spine. Measures 9.5'' x 11''. Some separation to joints. Mild dampstaining to interior, overall very good condition.
