First edition of the important book on the Americas, entitled ''America, Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World; Containing The Original of the Inhabitants, and the Remarkable Voyages...Adorn'd with Maps and Scuptures, by John Ogilby Esq.'' London, Printed by the author, 1671. This is a superior copy, with nearly all the 58 maps and plates present (57 plus frontispiece), and with all 66 engravings within the text, not usually found so complete. Book runs 674pp., profusely illustrated with fold-out maps and illustrations, many full and double-paged. Of the full-page plates, only the following six are missing, on pages 97, 213, 253, 297, 304 and 517 (Siara). The others present an engrossing portrait of the new land, not only giving an early depiction of New Amsterdam in the section titled ''New Netherland, now call'd New York'', describing the transition of sovereignty from the Netherlands to England in 1664, but also portraits of the famous explorers including Christopher Columbus, and enhanced maps of other areas such as Barbados, Mexico and the colonial states. Large folio measures 11'' x 16.25'', bound in contemporary quarter leather binding, with gilt titling and ribbed spine. Some scuffing to boards and cracking to front joint. Interior is well preserved with mild dampstaining to some pages, a few burn holes, expected foxing and light wear. Overall a very good plus copy of this important and fascinating work by His Majesty's cartographer John Ogilby.
