''Gone With the Wind'' telegram, authorizing producer David O. Selznick to enter into contracts with Loews, Inc. for the film. Dated 26 August 1938, telegram from John Hay Whitney reads in full, ''As member of Executive Committee [for Selznick International Pictures, Inc.] I hereby approve execution of contracts with Loews Incorporated regarding Gone With the Wind and authorize David O. Selznick as President to execute contracts on behalf of Corporation / John Hay Whitney''. David O. Selznick wanted Clark Gable to play the role of Rhett Butler, but since Gable was contracted to MGM and therefore unavailable, Selznick forged an agreement with Loew's -- MGM's parent company -- to help finance the film, share profits, and loan out Gable.
