First edition of the important book related to Judaism in America, ''Israel Vindicated'', signed by its author George Houston; Houston was identified as the author shortly after publication of the book, where he's credited as ''By an Israelite''. New York: Abraham Collins, 1820. Houston signs upon the front free endpaper, ''New York, Dec. 1820...from the author Geo Houston to D. Constable'' and additionally inscribes the front endpaper, ''From the author to D Constable Dec. 1820. 45''. The book's full title, ''Israel Vindicated; Being a Refutation of the Calumnies Propagated Respecting the Jewish Nation: In Which the Objects and Views of the American Society for Ameliorating the Condition of the Jews, Are Investigated'' was originally appended with ''and reasons assigned for rejecting the Christian religion'', but Houston took out the latter phrase, fearing such a statement would be too controversial. The organization at the heart of the book, the American Society for Ameliorating the Condition of the Jews, was established to convert Jews to Christianity, a subject covered by Houston along with the morality of Jesus and the authenticity of the Gospels. Book measures 5'' x 8'', bound in contemporary sheepskin. Front hinge partially separated, else very good condition with light wear and some dampstaining to rear endpaper. An important book, unusually signed by the author and included in ''Sabin Americana'', the reference of the most important books related to the Americas from 1500-1926.
