Interesting letter signed by King Charles XIV John of Sweden, then writing as Jean Bernadotte before his coronation, to French General Louis Baraguey d'Hilliers regarding insufficient resources to give his soldiers new uniforms. Letter is dated 17 November 1797 from Bernadotte's headquarters in Udine, Italy, at a time of infighting among the top Generals and Napoleon. Letter reads, ''You were misled, General, when you were told that I had rewarded the officers of my division with new uniforms as a sign of gratitude. I was not so fortunate as to procure such a favor for them. You know as well as I that our lack of resources on hand does not permit us to give them such a sign of our esteem. / With greetings and friendship, [signed] J. Bernadotte''. Letter measures 7.5'' x 11''. Uniform toning, foxing and folds, overall very good condition with a strong signature by Bernadotte.
