Attractive copy with contemporary binding of one-quarter leather, gilt titling and ribbed spine. The importance of ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' in heightening public outrage over slavery in the United States was so universally felt that when meeting Harriet Beecher Stowe for the first time during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln reportedly exclaimed, ''so you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.'' Volume measures 5'' x 7.5'' with plate illustrations throughout, including a tissued frontispiece. Runs 483pp. Some foxing, previous owner's stamp to half-title page and one detached illustration. Overall very good condition.
