Robert Crumb hand-drawn illustration, drawn for and published in the 1985 edition of ''The Monkey Wrench Gang'' by Edward Abbey, the novel's 10th anniversary edition chronicling the iconic Gang of misfit outlaw-saboteurs determined to protect the American West from pollution, over development, and other forms of environmental exploitation. Large illustration measures 10.5'' x 12.75'', in ink and pencil with correction fluid on paper, signed ''R. CRUMB '84'' at lower right. Crumb's illustration depicts protagonist George Hayduke, the ex-green beret member of the Gang, just before he escapes Bishop Love's clutches in an Arizona diner. Caption reads, ''The steam spiraled up from the coffee in the shape, transient but clear, of a question mark. The question was not the practical one - are they armed?.....The question was: will the sphincter hold till I get out of here free and clear?'' Illustration is matted to a size of 15'' x 17.25'', with mat affixed to foam board on its margins. Illustration itself doesn't appear to be attached to foam board. Small crease to lower left, next to caption, otherwise in near fine condition.
