Albert Einstein autograph letter twice-signed upon a postcard from Hohenzollern, Germany, where Einstein and his future wife Elsa were visiting. Composed on 3 September 1917, Einstein writes to Michele Besso, his closest friend and scientific collaborator, regarding most notably an acquaintance with a local parson whom Einstein unexpectedly felt a kinship. Letter reads in full, ''Dear Michele! The watch arrived well and it is running correctly again. The trip worked out well. Ehrat really did come to Schaffhausen. The other morning we crossed the border posts, but it was slow. In Thayngen, there was luggage inspection that lasted a whole hour. It is lucky that I was not carrying any more goods. In Gottmadingen, I was almost the last person to be checked and I missed the connection. A layover until 5 o'clock. I just barely made it as far as Sigmaringen. On Saturday morning, I traveled here and surprised my parson by making the one-hour ascending trip up to the village on foot. (What does my dear foster mother Anna [Besso's wife] say about that?) My insides, however, have not rebelled in the slightest, not at all so far in fact. This is literally the land of milk and honey, and the parson is a very kind person whose thinking is most extensively, if not completely, in accord with my own, even in matters, about which one will hardly believe it. / Please let me thank you one more time for your hospitality and loving care. But you probably do not want to hear of it. At any rate, I shall recommend the Sanatorium Anna most warmly to the 'respective authorities,' as is only proper. Otherwise, however, she will have to practice patience and gentleness. She should start with a quarter of an hour each day and then increase it (key word: Life is hard). I do not know yet, whether Elsa and I will still take a trip somewhere; it depends on her. My address, then, is Haberlandstr. 5. The move seems to have been completed already. / Affectionate greetings from your / Albert''. Einstein additionally writes his name in the return address portion of the card, '' Sender A. Einstein / currently in Benzingen / Hohenzollern.'' Card measures 3.5'' x 5.5''. Light uniform toning, otherwise near fine condition.
