William Henry Harrison signed engraving of himself, likely the earliest signed image of any President and the only known example for Harrison. Harrison is known for serving the shortest length of time as President, dying exactly one month after he took the oath of office on 4 March 1841, making his signature as President the most valuable of all Presidential autographs. This engraving, done by Richard W. Dodson based on a painting by J.R. Lambdin, was likely signed in the late 1830s, shortly before assuming the office of the President. Harrison signs below his image, ''Gen. W.H. Harrison''. Signed upon the integral tab, left in place when the engraving was trimmed. Engraving is affixed to the front free endpaper of the book ''Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians in the Higher and Middle Classes, Contrasted with Real Christianity'' by William Wilberforce. New York: American Tract Society, circa 1830. Engraving measures approximately 1.25'' x 1.75'' and book measures 3.75'' x 6''. Quarter-leather hardcover book has rubbing and light wear to covers, scattered staining to interior and partially detached front cover, overall fair to good condition. Engraving and signature are in very good condition with ink blot to first letter G, light soiling and small edge tears to image.
