Charles Evans Hughes, Sr. signed proclamation, announcing the death of Woodrow Wilson. Outlined in black for mourning, the proclamation by President Calvin Coolidge reads in part, ''...As President of the United States...he led the nation through the terrific struggle of the world war with a lofty idealism which never failed him. He gave utterance to the aspiration of humanity with an eloquence which held the attention of all the earth and made American a new and enlarged influence...'' Signed ''Charles Evans Hughes'' as Secretary of State. Undated, though on or shortly after Wilson's death on 3 February 1924. Proclamation is printed by the Government Printing Office. Measures 16'' x 12.5'' unfolded. Center fold and light creasing, otherwise near fine.
