Olympic relay torch used in the 2004 Summer Olympics. The Torch Relay tradition began in 1928, and transports a spark from the parent flame in Olympia, Greece to the host city in time for the opening ceremonies. 2004 marked the return of the Games to their birth country and to the city of their modern revival. To celebrate, the torch united all 5 continents and traveled for 78,000 km over a span of 78 days. For the first time in history, the torch visited Africa and Latin America, as well as every previous Olympic city. Designed by Andreas Varotsos who used an olive tree leaf as inspiration, torch is made of wood (olive tree) and metal (magnesium), with the metal piece bearing the Athens logo with the Olympic rings beneath it. Measures 68 cm or 26.7'' and weighs 580 g (missing fuel tank). Wear from use including some bending of metal at the top. Overall very good condition.
