Richard Nixon handwritten note for a speech given at Whittier College, his hometown and alma mater in California, during the 1952 Presidential election. Headlined ''Whittier'', speech reads in part, ''Pat & I have had some memorable experiences since July 11 [date of the 1952 Republican convention] & there will be more but none will mean more to us than this great heartwarming reception of the people who know us best...We are honored by the presence of California great gov E.W. [Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren] and by Bill Knowland - The finest Senator a state could have. When we add Goody [Lt. Governor Goodwin] Knight - who has so many friends in this community; the Congressmen, the dignitaries - + you folks it makes the evening perfect...'' Referring to the Hadley Field athletic field where Nixon gave the speech, he writes, ''Do you realize that it's taken me 18 years to do it but I have finally gotten off the bench onto the playing field! Believe me if we display the same fight, will to win & determination [as] Chief Newman's team - there'll be no doubt as to the outcome...'' Nixon later writes about Americans serving in the Korean War: ''...we tend to forget that American boys [are] fighting so that we continue to have choice as to those who head our government...'' Document was given by Nixon to his biographer Earl Mazo, who wrote, ''Richard Nixon: A Political and Personal Portrait'' in 1959. Single page is handwritten in pencil on yellow legal paper measuring 8'' x 12.5''. Note contains various fingerprints to edges. Very good condition.
