Rene Gagnon WWII autograph letter signed as a Private in the U.S. Marine Corps. Gagnon was one of the six soldiers pictured in ''Raising The Flag on Iwo Jima'', one of the most famous photographs of all time. Here, he writes to his hometown sweetheart Pauline Harnois in a letter dated 28 December 1943. From his military training at the Naval Prison Camp in Charleston, South Carolina, he writes on Marine Corps stationery, ''Dearest Darling Kiddo / Well here we are darling another day, nearer to victory and married life for you and me...You know they say the war is going to last six more years, one year to lick the Germans, one year to lick the Japs, and four years to get the Yankees back up North but here's one Yankee that they wont have to ask twice to back up north, boy as soon as I get that discharge I'll run right up north, then I won't stop till I land in your arms...Rene xoxoxo''. Accompanied by the mailing envelope hand-addressed and signed by Gagnon. 2pp. letter in pencil on a single sheet measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. Toning, else near fine.
