Militia appointment signed by American revolutionary John Hancock on 1 November 1782. Document appoints one Gideon O'Brien as Captain in the 6th regiment of a Lincoln County, Massachusetts militia. Hancock's familiar large signature with his paraph appears distinctively on the document, countersigned by John Avery, who served as the first Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Measures 11.25'' x 14'', matted and framed to 18.5'' x 21.5''. Some paper loss at folds, but overall a handsome document in very good condition.
