James Garfield signed free frank envelope, dated 11 January 1872 as an Ohio Congressman. Addressed to President Burke A. Hinsdale in Ohio, Garfield signs at upper right ''J.A. Garfield M.C [Member of Congress]''. Measures 8.5'' x 3.75''. Smudging to Garfield's signature and tears to the envelope, overall very good condition. Franking privileges (the ability to send mail for free, so long as it was for government business) were given to elected federal officials and required the signature of the sender in lieu of a stamp. Free franks are among the most desirable of Presidential signatures.
