WWII Iwo Jima hero Rene Gagnon autograph letter signed as a Private First Class in the US Marine Corps. Gagnon was one of the six WWII soldiers elevated to icon status after appearing in the famous photograph ''Raising The Flag on Iwo Jima.'' Datelined 27 June 1943 from training camp on Parris Island, South Carolina, letter is addressed to his love back home, Pauline Harnois, and reads in part: ''...we spend almost all day Sunday in our breaks we're either sleeping or sitting down and cleaning our rifles...You'll never know how much I miss you, I wish that I could take you along with we when I am shipped to my new post, but I guess that is impossible so, I'll just have to dream of how nice it would be to have you along...While on furlough I've got to go to Boston 1 day on business for the Marine Corp...P.S. The ones who make the most when we shoot for record will get a P.M.C. stripe -- so please say a little prayer for me will you...'' Signed ''Rene''. Letter runs 4pp. on two sheets, measuring 7'' x 10.5''. Expected toning and two horizontal folds from mailing. Very good.
