Clarence Darrow typed letter signed, dated 30 May 1930 on his personal stationery. Letter is addressed to Doctor Forest R. Black, a law professor at the University of Kentucky who wrote a book on prohibition, ''Ill Starred Prohibition Cases: A Study in Judicial Pathology''. Letter reads in full: ''I thank you very much for sending me your article in which you discuss the foolish decision of the Supreme Court in the case where barrels were seized on the ground that they were to be used to contain whiskey. There seems to be no limit to the fanaticism of the people interested in this prohibition crusade. The fanaticism extends from the lowest Methodist evangelist to the Supreme Court of the United States. Your discussion is an excellent one. I don't see how it can be disputed except by a decision which will not be rendered for some time yet. You said nothing about returning this paper and I presume you don't need it now. I think I shall keep it until the case is tried. I trust the Mercury will print this article and I think it will. It certainly is sound and well written and should appeal to Mr. Mencken. I have a very warm friend down there in your college, Dr. Anderson, and I have been intending for some time to come down and see him, but, I intend lots of things that I never accomplish. Thanking you for your kindness.'' Signed ''Clarence Darrow'' in blue ink. One page letter measures 7'' x 10.5'' with toning and light folds throughout. Else very good condition.
