Alexander J. Dallas autograph letter signed as Secretary of The U.S. Treasury. Letter dated 31 July 1816 is addressed to the Loan Officer of the State of Georgia. Its content reads, ''Sir, A considerable sum of Treasury Notes, about 342,000 Dollars will become due at Savannah on Mar 1 of September next. Part of the amount has, probably, been received on account of [illegible]; and the rest is possessed by the Banks. You will be pledged to ascertain as soon as possible, the outstanding amount and the disposition of the Holders to accommodate the Treasury with a renewal of the whole, or of a part, if such an arrangement [illegible]. The revenue in Georgia is invested principally in [illegible] Notes; and it is extremely difficult to meet the local demand on the Government with the local currency. I am very respectfully, Sir, [illegible] / A. J. Dallas''. Single-page letter measures 8'' x 9.75''. Left edge has been reinforced. Toning, creasing and notation to verso. Good.
