William McKinley letter signed as Congressman from Ohio. Dated 7 January 1882, letter on House of Representatives stationery is addressed to A.E. Bonsall Esq., in Akron, Ohio and reads in part, ''In reply to your favor of January 5th, applying for a situation in one of the departments here, I am forced to say that I do not now see anything encouraging in the outlook. The quota from Ohio is full...[signed] Wm McKinley''. Single-page letter on a ruled sheet measures 5.25'' x 8.25''. Creasing, pencil notation and a small stain to verso. Near fine overall.
