Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed as President, dated 17 September 1956 on official White House stationery. Here, Eisenhower writes to his brother Edgar, thoroughly discussing the current political climate in the Pacific Northwest and the resignation of his Secretary of the Interior, Doug McKay: ''...As to the people who feel that they should not vote for me because of the added risks this job imposes upon my life, I have no real answer. I have tried, so far as possible, to throw such thoughts out of my mind. The only reason I got into politics in the first place was to attempt to bring the United States around to understand the virtues of progress along a straight, clearly-defined road, rather than one that veered constantly and always to the left...There is one statement you make that illustrates again how easy it is for misapprehensions and misunderstandings to gain credibility in the United States. You say, 'Republicans in that state resent the fact that the national Administration required Doug McKay to resign...and run for United States Senator.' Nothing could be further from the truth. Doug McKay received a number of suggestions from Oregon that he run for the Senate...when McKay came to me to announce his intention to resign, he was so certain that he would have no opposition in the primary that I gave him quite a long letter expressing my satisfaction that he was going to carry the banner of the Administration against [Wayne] Morse, who, as you may suspect, ranks quite low in my opinion...'' Signed ''DE'' in black ink. Letter measures 7'' x 10.5'' on four single-sided pages, with two holes punched and staple holes at top. Near fine.
