Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Europe during WWII. He writes to his wife, Mamie, about their son and a mysterious letter from a British girl. He dates his letter 11 October (1944), in part: ''My darling - Today a very nice note arrived from you, the one you wrote while awaiting John's arrival from Lincoln, Neb. The long letter written to you by the British girl (enclosed in your letter) was a duplicate of one we received some weeks ago. I sent the original out for investigation, but will follow up to see what happened. We have dozens of such to handle - a war zone does funny things to people. It is no light matter to approve sentences that ruin not one, but several lives, but it is one of the burdens placed upon a commander in war...It looks as if I'll be travelling on my birthday. I'm glad of that as otherwise the staff would probably want to have a 'dinner' of some kind, and I loathe parties in war time. I feel as if I were indifferent to the soldier living in mud and cold. Anyway, who wants to be reminded of his 54th birthday...You said, with respect to John 'you didn't tell me what you had cooked up.' The thing is - I've cooked up nothing, and I don't know where he is or what he is going to do. I did make sure that if he wanted to go to a division coming to this theater, the W.D. would not object merely because I was in command here. But what has happened is a sealed book, so far as I'm concerned. I suppose I'll soon find out...Loads of love, my sweet. Take care of yourself. My best to our friends. / Always your / Ike''. Includes original mailing envelope signed ''Dwight D Eisenhower'' and postmarked 12 October 1944. Letter is written in ink and runs 2pp. on ruled paper. Measures 8'' x 10.5''. Near fine.
