Montgomery Improvement Association's inaugural newsletter, dated 7 June 1956 amidst the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Dated 7 June 1956 ''Vol. 1 Mo. 1'', newsletter summarizes the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the formation of the MIA, along with various arrests and trials of Civil Rights leaders, all of which eventually led to the tremendous development in the Civil Rights movement and the overturning of segregation. Introduction reads in part, ''The Montgomery Improvement Association, which embodies the membership of 50,000 Negroes of the city, has received so many thousands of letters, telegrams, and telephone calls from over the nation requesting information concerning the bus protest, that interested citizens have agreed to publish a bi-monthly newsletter...'' Newsletter runs 3pp. and measures 8.5'' x 14''. Toning and staple holes to top left. Very good. From the collection of Maude Ballou, Martin Luther King Jr.'s close friend and personal secretary.
