Harper Lee, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of ''To Kill A Mockingbird'' disregards her pen name to sign this autograph letter ''Nelle Harper''. In the letter she datelines, ''From New York, but I'll soon be home, 15 July 2005'', the acclaimed author known for her refusal to talk with the media writes openly about her fame and health. Letter reads in full, ''Dear Dr. Engelhardt: Thank you for the letter that was forwarded to me. It's always a pleasure to hear from you. In answer to your questions: no, there's no TV interview of the C-span type with me. I simply don't give interviews, because it takes great skill to ask meaningful questions and very few people in the media have it; and because it's hard enough to live in Monroeville with its Harper Lee tourist industry. You think my home is my castle? No, sir! Yes there is a poet laureate of Alabama but I don't know who the current one is. I think it's a lady, though. I am acquainted with two former ones -- one of whom has 'Former Poet Laureate of Alabama' on his stationery! Please excuse my penmanship. I have a feeling that it's cater cornered on the page. Macular degeneration has come upon me like gang-busters and I can't even file my fingernails, much less read. Hope you can read this, though. With best regards, Nelle Harper.'' Envelope is included. Measures 8.5'' x 11''. Standard folds, else fine.
