George Washington Presidential invitation to dinner, reading in full: ''The President of the United States requests the Pleasure of the Register of the Treasury's [Joseph Nourse's] company to Dine, on Thursday next at 4 o'clock / 22 October, 1792 / An answer is requested''. Partly printed document measures approximately 4.5'' x 3''. Nourse was the first U.S. Register of the Treasury. According to ''The Papers of Alexander Hamilton'' by Harold C. Syrett, Hamilton had noted that this day concluded with ''...a contract for several articles of Clothing specified'' for United States troops for the year 1793. The dinner meeting that evening with the 1st U.S. Register of the Treasury was probably regarding this same recorded historical event. Toning, slight foxing and minimal glue remnants to verso. Very good condition. Filled out invitations from the Presidency of George Washington are almost unheard of and this is a particularly important example.
