Fantastic John Wayne typed letter signed to Henry Hathaway, who directed Wayne in numerous westerns, including 1968's ''True Grit'' for which Wayne won his only Oscar. Wayne writes to Hathaway on 16 May 1969 shortly after receiving his Oscar: ''Dear Henry, I know you're behind the Iron Curtain but you'll see this when you return and will know that I am deeply grateful for your magnificent direction and integrity to Portis' fine book. [Charles Portis wrote the novel ''True Grit'' upon which the movie was based.] This may sound a little stilted, but I'm trying to express a deep feeling of love that I have had for you over the years. You finally got a story worthy of your efforts and handled it magnificently. Thanks, Henry. Affectionately, [signed] Duke''. Letter upon Wayne's personal stationery measures 6'' x 8.25''. One fold and mounting remnants to verso, else near fine condition.
