William T. Sherman autograph letter signed. Dated 30 December 1889, letter from Sherman as the celebrated Civil War figure in the last years of his life is written to his former U.S. Military Academy classmate, General Stewart Van Vliet of Washington. Letter reads in part, ''Dear Van - I am this month in receipt of your letter of the 28..., and hurry to say that after full consideration I have...declined the Ball of Jan 2...Tomorrow night I come in after an all night affair at the Players Club to see the old year out + new year in on the night of the 3rd I am under pressure of long standing to attend a Reception at the New Lenox Lyceum....human flesh and + blood cannot stain this [illegible]. Like old Rip I intend to reform. Turn over a new leaf etc. etc. but if you will come to our house for dinner the 3rd of January you can go to the [illegible] Ball from here about midnight - Fashion forbids the opening till the Opera is out...With love to all I am always your classmate + friend / W.T. Sherman''. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. 3pp. letter on a single sheet of ruled card style stationery measures 5.5'' x 9.25''. Pencil notations to verso.
