Marquis de Lafayette autograph letter signed. Datelined Paris, 30 January 1834, letter is addressed to the Gentlemen of the Committee for the Ball of the American Bachelors. Lafayette opts out of the ball to attend a funeral, at which he contracted an illness that killed him four months after this letter was penned. Letter reads in part, ''My dear young friends...I much regret to be deprived of the pleasure which I had so fondly anticipated. Nothing but this melancholy event and its circumstances could prevent my enjoying the delight to pass this evening with you and the happy collection of American fellow citizens, Ladies and Gentlemen that are to attend your Ball...Lafayette''. Single-page letter on card-style stationery measures 7.25'' x 8.75''. With address panel to verso. Creasing and chip to integral verso, else very good.
