Oliver Wendell Holmes autograph letter signed ''OW Holmes'' to a Mr. Fields -- likely poet James Thomas Fields. It's datelined 31 October from 164 Charles St.; Holmes' Boston residence from 1858 to 1870. The physician and author who exposed the cause of puerperal fever writes: ''Got back this morning. Much dilapidated, not improving. Have had a hard time of it with my old enemy, but did Montreal and Quebec pretty thoroughly. I hope to be well enough to be with you on the 6th, which promises to be so pleasant an occasion. Love always / OW Holmes''. Measures 4.5'' x 7'' on card-style stationery. Toning, creasing, and minor foxing to verso, else near fine.
