Undated Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed ''Ike'' to his wife, Mamie. Letter reads in part, ''This job would be far easier...if you could only be here. Relief from the drive is hard to find; I'm even denied the opportunity to make the troop inspections to which I'd look forward so eagerly. Ever since Gen. Marshall's visit we've been keyed up to a higher pitch than ever, I'm tied, definitely, to this city...Naturally I never talk business in letters to you...Now -- with everything so very secret, I take my pen in hand with a feeling of 'what can I say except to tell her I'm well & just as much in love with her as ever?' -- So if my notes seem rambling & disconnected just put it down to a failing imagination. But after all, even the state of the weather is a secret! and very correctly so...I've yet to hear from [son] Johnny except for that one short note...Of course it's impossible for him to understand the loneliness of such an existence as I had...Sometimes I worry...that he may be just a bit spoiled...this evening I have to speak two minutes on the radio. Just at a time when it's inconvenient (7:30 pm) but so it goes. I agreed because...W D wanted me to do so...'' He adds a postscript that reads in part, ''...Yesterday...was a typical day. From 8:30 to 7:30 not one minute alone, including lunch (which was a conference). Then I had to start in to do my own work, that no one can do for me...'' 8'' x 10.5'' four page letter (on four sheets) is in fine condition.
