Dwight D. Eisenhower WWII autograph letter signed as Lt. General and Commander of the European Theatre of Operations. From his London headquarters in August of 1942, he writes to his wife, Mamie. It reads in part: ''Darling...This morning I recd a radio from Gen. Marshal saying 'Mrs. Eisenhower says she and family are fine.' I certainly appreciate his thoughtfulness...We're in a bit of a tailspin - and we're not going to get out of it completely until Bedell gets here. Red Cross - Lease Lend - OSS - AAA - BBB - CCC and all the other orgs and letters get me nuts at times. Soldiering is no longer a simple thing of shouting 'Turn boys turn!' In a place like this the C.G. (at least) must be a bit of a diplomat - lawyer - promoter - salesman - social hound - liar (at least to get out of social affairs) - mountebank - actor - Simon Legree - humanitarian - orator - and incidentally (sometimes I think most damnably incidentally) a soldier! But I think I keep my feet on the ground & my brain fairly clear. This weekend I go to Chequers again for dinner & spend the night. I'll be sleepy next day! Wayne goes along. But aside from 'Command' things like that I keep fairly clear of evening engagements. Butch and I spend lots of time over a late dinner and then bed...One of my trunks has apparently been lost! The one with all the candy - cigs - soup - boots - etc. etc. in it, including some valuable equipment! Some of the officers have received no baggage at all...I've raised merry h--- about the matter; but no soap. A lot of trunks arrived completely rifled of contents. Well - it's just war! Nothing to do about it I guess. Give my love to all the family & thank you so much dear for writing my mother. I'd like to have the Abilene Reflector [hometown paper] telling about that July 17 celebration...Your Ike''. With original War Department Headquarters / European Theater of Operations US Army envelope postmarked 3 August 1942. 4pp. letter measures 6'' x 9''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
