Giuseppe Garibaldi 28 November 1876 autograph letter signed ''G. Garibaldi'', with mailing envelope addressed to the contentious French writer, Leo Taxil, who wrote a series of anti-Catholic books around the time of this letter. Letter is written in French, and begins, ''Mon cher Taxil''. Garibaldi, a national hero in Italy at this time, was twice exiled from his homeland, largely due to fears of his military prowess as he would defeat numerically stronger forces. Three years after writing this letter, Taxil was tried for his ''perverse'' writing in 1879, but acquitted. 8'' x 11'' letter on one page is split at center into two separate portions. With original postmarked envelope, stamp intact, affixed to lower portion of letter. Also includes a 6.25'' x 9.5'' photo of Garibaldi. Letter has a .5'' chip to top, foxing, fading to ink, and tape residue along bottom. Good plus condition.
