Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed to his wife from Europe during WWII. He dates his sentimental letter ''Tues. morning / 20 October [1942]'' and writes, ''My Darling: I've been in Scotland for three days...for some reason I feel very badly this a.m. I'm dizzy in the head & weak in the stomach. I think it's just reaction from incessant riding - but in any event I get a low feeling that's hard to combat. Maybe I'm just homesick - could be!...As time passes our work days get a bit more hectic and it would be entirely possible for me to miss getting you a message exactly when I would want to do so - like your birthday on Nov. 14 or Thanksgiving. Bob Littlejohn & Jim already arranged for one little package to come to you - but the times are so uncertain that anything can always happen...regardless of messages, presents, telegrams, etc. please remember that I love you - that you're precious to me and that I'd do a lot better work anywhere, any time, if I had you with me. One of the reasons that war is so terrible is because it disrupts and interferes with the nicest relationships that mankind can develop - but until man has developed more common sense it seems that he is slated to cause himself more unhappiness than can result from all the natural or unavoidable causes in the world. Look out - I'll be getting 'philosophies' - Thought there might be a letter from you today, but I learn no planes have arrived for several days - which is undoubtedly the reason...I love you - always. As ever, Ike''. Original envelope is included, and is made out in Eisenhower's hand to Mamie at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. 3pp. letter measures 6'' x 9''. Near fine.
