Leo Ryan typed letter signed, dated 29 January 1969 on his official California assemblyman stationery. As an avid proponent for exposing human rights violations, particularly in cults, nine years after this letter was written Ryan was tragically murdered in Guyana by members of the Peoples Temple shortly before the Jonestown Massacre in 1978, becoming the only U.S. Congressman ever killed in the line of duty. Here, Assemblyman Ryan thanks a constituent for a letter regarding evaluation of CHIPS: ''...Thank you for your letter regarding the evaluation of members of the California Highway Patrol...I am taking the liberty of forwarding your letter on to the committee which normally deals with such matters...'' Signed ''Leo J. Ryan'' in black ink. Letter measures 8.5'' x 11'' with two light folds, else near fine. Includes original envelope.
