Josef Mengele WWII-dated autograph letter signed to his wife, while fighting behind Russian lines in 1942. Dated 18 February 1942, Mengele writes, ''My beloved Butzle! Don't be afraid; we won't freeze to death. If you and I could be in O. right now, we would be happy together. Right? What would we do? We would 'sleep' long hours, go for a walk, have a great lunch, 'sleep' some more, and have a cup of coffee in the Luitpold, Bauer, Bergkristall and so forth. Afterwards, we would go for another walk, have a great dinner, see a play or go to the movies, and later we would 'sleep' again, right? Is that okay with you? Last evening, I read Stifter's 'Forest Road' (Der Waldsteig) in one sitting. A car battery provided me with sufficient light. What a different world: So tender, lovely, graceful, beautiful, good and pure, and somehow not really masculine. Maybe after the war, we can indulge again in this world where everything is beautiful. Our time has very little space for such things. We're just no romantics or Biedermeier people. Our time resembles more the age of Frederick the Great. The nice weather has brought us Russian fighter planes, but that's not new. In 10 more days, February is over, and the war is going to move into spring. What do you want to get me for my birthday? I'm looking forward to getting my surprise even if it's just a little thing. Be brave my beloved wife, and don't worry. Everything is going to be all right. With uncounted hot kisses, always yours, Butz.'' Written in pencil and signed ''J. Mengele'' in address panel. Letter doubles as an envelope and is postmarked 22 February 1942 from ''Feldpost'' with a stamped Nazi symbol. Measures 8'' x 11'' unfolded. Near fine condition. German letter is accompanied by full translation.
