Civil War broadside produced by the Union to convince its readers that Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens was never in favor of secession, that Lincoln was hesitant to declare war and that the instigator of the entire Civil War was actually President Buchanan. Headline reads ''Who Is Responsible For The War? / Who Accountable For Its Horrors And Desolations?'' The document identifies the first three-quarters of its text as a transcription of Alexander H. Stephens' 31 January 1861 speech delivered in the Secession Convention of Georgia, in which he says: ''...the countless millions of dollars you must expend in a war with the North, with tens of thousands of your sons and brothers slain in battle, and offered up as sacrifices upon the altar of your ambition...for the overthrow of the American Government, established by our common ancestry...founded on the principles of Right, Justice and Humanity?...'' The final portion contains a timeline of events leading up to the war in support of the claim that Buchanan is at fault for tearing the nation apart. 1pp. measures 9.5'' x 11.25''. Toning and separation to folds repaired by tape to verso, with numerical notations in pencil to verso. Overall very good.
