First edition set of J.R.R. Tolkien's ''Lord of the Rings.'' Tolkien's fantasy epic published in three volumes, as a continuation of his ''Hobbit'' tale. The first book in his trilogy, ''The Fellowship of the Ring,'' is a 4th impression, printed in November of 1955 by Purnell and Sons Ltd., housed in a 4th impression dustjacket. The second volume is the 2nd impression of ''The Two Towers,'' George Allen & Unwin Ltd: London: 1954, with a 2nd impression dustjacket. The final volume, ''The Return of the King,'' George Allen & Unwin Ltd: London: 1955, is a first printing in a first printing dustjacket. Each 6'' x 9'' volume features a fold-out map of Tolkien's world at the rear, and comes bound in crimson cloth boards with red top edges and gilt lettering to spines. The dustjackets are all in good condition, save for paper loss to spine of ''Two Towers'' dustjacket. The books are slightly cocked, with mild toning to endpapers. In very good condition overall. An attractive set.
