Eleanor Roosevelt typed letter signed. Dated 28 June 1954, the former First Lady's forthright letter reads: ''...The form of government we have is a republic with representatives elected by the people but we live in a democracy in a democratic way of life. You constantly hear it said that the democracies of the West are in opposition to communist countries. I thought it would be easily understood by anyone following public affairs that Congressional investigations and loyalty boards in the departments were a new type of procedure started under a Democratic administration but vastly developed under the present Republican administration. For many years we were protected by the FBI and the courts and followed our common law legal practices and I think perhaps we would be a more united country if we returned to those agencies for our protection...[signed] Eleanor Roosevelt''. She adds the word ''for'' in the final sentence by hand. 2pp. letter on 2 sheets of Val-Kill Cottage stationery measures 6'' x 7''. Creasing, else near fine. With free franked envelope bearing stamped signature of Mrs. Roosevelt.
