Life Achievement award presented to Arthur Ashe by Arete. The Arete Awards For Courage in Sports honor athletes who overcome myriad obstacles to excel in sports. Arthur Ashe was a model athlete for the Arete ideals: he surmounted racial barriers to become the first black American on the prestigious U.S. Davis Cup Team and the first black winner of the U.S. Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Etched glass award reads, ''ARETE / Awards For Courage In Sports / Arthur Ashe / Life Achievement Award / December 8, 1993''. Sits on a trapezoid-shaped wooden base. Measures 7'' in total height, 5.75'' across and 3'' deep. Scattered scratches to base, else fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
