Arthur Ashe's 1987 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his brief but voluminous entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. In tennis, Ashe here jots down observations on the dramatic Wimbledon women's singles final between Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. He keeps track of points under "N" and "G" and writes, "45 matches in a row / 5-3 Navatilova's record for 1987 win / 15,000 / both had many first point double-fault at 30-0; 1-1". In Palm Beach in November, Ashe organizes a Round Robin game of tennis between "Lendl, Cash, McEnroe, Edberg" with the following wagers: "each ace = $2000 up & down / each DF = $2000 up & down / each ball pass the net = $200 up & down (to winner) / each set = $30,000 up & down". He pairs up the men and makes additional notes on rules and cash payouts with $1,000,000 ultimately noted, perhaps the final payout. On his busy social calendar, Ashe writes, "Notre Dame Negro League Baseball", "Sports Emmy / Sheraton Hotel", "Celeste Bartos Forum / 'Racism in Sports'" and makes notes regarding a speaking engagement at IBM on "leadership & dedication". Media appearances include an HBO PSA, ESPN and ABC. He marks a trip to Japan, mentions a "Strom Thurmond Letter" and records his wife's birthday, baby daughter Camera's first birthday and christening. He reminds himself of a court date regarding Camera's adoption and makes a note to "Pay US Open box bill". In large letters he records, "REGINALD WEIR DIED". Weir paved the way for Ashe's success in tennis as the first black tennis player to compete in the United States Lawn Tennis Association national championship. Included is a date with Head brand sporting equipment, with whom he produced a line of tennis gear. He takes a week off for ''VACATION'' and keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines, marking the day the World Series starts and a Tyson fight. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on almost every single page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover measuring 5.75'' x 8.25''. In very good condition, with mild wear. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. For many more photos detailing this lot please copy and paste the following link: www.photobucket.com/1987journal
