Arthur Ashe's 1985 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his brief but voluminous entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. He starts the year on 1 January with his list of resolutions: "1. Finish book 2. Balance schedule better". Ten days later, however, his whirlwind year included an arrest for protesting against the South African apartheid regime and then, a day later on the 12th, he writes interesting notes referring to his heart disease; unbeknownst to him at this time, Ashe had contracted HIV several years earlier in a faulty blood transfusion. He writes, "…full stress test in 6-10 wks (malpractice 10 years ago)…Wear Halter Monitor w/ activity…Encourage exercise for synergy…" This year also saw Ashe attend his "Hall of Fame Ceremonies" on 13 July when he was inducted. It also saw him undergo hospitalization, call Jesse Jackson, "write Davis Cup proposal", conduct a "Seminar 'TO GO PRO'!" and countless other activities. In tennis, Ashe notes Wimbledon, the Davis Cup, U.S. Open and more. Interesting entries appear on 20 July where Ashe makes notes, perhaps pertaining to his book "A Hard Road to Glory: A History of the African-American Athlete," published in 1988: "'Lack of coaching' MONEY / 'Upper Class Boys' / BREASTROKE [sic] best - Black has fast-twitch thighs". Another note, under the header "MLK" lists black athletes next to their respective sports, "Boxing - Ali / Baseball - Bob Gibson - Aaron / Track - Bob Beamon / Football - Simpson / Basketball - Russell / Tennis - Athea [sic] / Golf - Elder / Bowling - [no name] / Coach - Eddie Robinson". Media appearances include a BET interview and the Tonight Show. Frequently, Ashe also uses the planner to record the names and numbers of his contacts. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on almost every page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild toning throughout and wear to cover edges. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
