Arthur Ashe 1981 Davis Cup semifinals commemorative silver cup, as the U.S. beat Australia in the semifinals of the series 5-0. Ashe long had a history with the Davis Cup, becoming the first African American selected for the prestigious U.S. team in 1963. In his 10 years of Davis Cup play, Ashe won 27 singles games. After retiring in 1980 due to a heart attack, Ashe continued to support the sport of tennis in a multitude of ways, including becoming the coach of the U.S. team in 1981, leading the team to victory that year. Ornate silver cup has abstract stripes running throughout with ''1981 Davis Cup USA v Australia'' engraved to the bottom ring of cup. Measures 6.75'' x 3.5'' in diameter. Near fine condition. With an LOA from Ashe's widow.
